Siding upkeep is crucial for home maintenance. It protects your home and enhances its curb appeal. Although siding is durable, it still requires regular maintenance to ensure its longevity.
Painting protects all types of siding against weather, water buildup, and mould. A fresh coat of paint can quickly restore your home’s appearance and increase its perceived value.
But is a fresh paint job necessarily the right solution for your home or business?
Choosing the Right Paint for Your Siding
To ensure the durability and longevity of your siding, choosing the correct type of paint is crucial. You’ll need to consider the type of siding material you have, whether it’s vinyl, aluminum, wood, or something else.
Acrylic exterior paints are best to use on siding made from wood. Why? Its elasticity allows it to expand and contract with the wood in extreme temperatures. Semi-transparent, semi-solid, and solid stains are another option. If you don’t want to hide the colour of the wood, you can also choose a clear waterproofing sealant.
When done correctly, you should get 5 – 10 years of attractive protection using a solid stain or paint. Sealant generally needs to be redone once a year.
Acrylic paints are also suitable for aluminum siding. Exterior acrylic goes on smooth and dries fast, which makes it friendly to work with; however, it can also be a problem if you don’t work fast enough. Your best bet is to use a high-quality 100% acrylic latex paint. You’ll pay a little more, but it won’t bubble and still adheres well to the surface.
100% acrylic paint is a good choice for vinyl siding. You’ll want to ensure it is labeled “vinyl safe.” If your siding is pitted, it may require a primer first. When it comes time to paint, it’s wise to apply two coats using a sprayer for the best results. And because you don’t want your vinyl to overheat, you should only apply lighter colours.
Fiber cement siding can also use acrylic or acrylic latex paints, and the finished product should last 10 – 15 years.
Do you have stucco? If so, this can be trickier for the do-it-yourselfer. However, with the proper prep work, an acrylic masonry paint should serve you well for 5-10 years.
When You Shouldn’t Paint Your Siding
To paint, or not to paint, that is the question. It often depends on the extent of the visible damage on the siding and its age.
Is the siding cosmetically ugly, or is there a potential problem that is better served with a siding upgrade?
Vinyl Siding
If your siding is over 20 years old and shows signs of bubbling, gaps, cracks, dents, or moisture intrusion, it’s best to consult a professional. Keep in mind that if your siding is newer, painting it may void any remaining warranty.
Wood Siding
Wood siding can last anywhere from 15-40 years, but it’s not immune to damage. Moisture is the biggest concern, causing warped boards, rot, and cracks. If the damage is severe, even a professional paint job won’t be a good enough fix to prevent further deterioration.
Aluminum Siding
Aluminum siding can become chalky over time due to oxidation. If the aluminum was previously painted and appears in poor condition, adding another coat likely won’t be the most cost-effective solution.
Fiber Cement/James Hardie Board Siding
Fiber Cement panels are highly durable and provide a 30-year lifespan and built-in fire resistance. However, they can still be physically damaged and take on water. If the damage appears larger than a dime, it may need more than just a quick patch.
